Services for blind or partially sighted adults
Our Sensory staff offer a holistic assessment which includes:
- Assessment, demonstration and support with ordering and training in the use of independent living equipment for example Liquid Level Indicators, talking watches, easy readers, kitchen equipment.
- Advice, information and support to visually impaired people, their carers and families on a broad range of topics with the aim of maximising independence.
- Basic advice on benefits, employment, social activities and referring on for further support.
- Signposting on to other relevant local and national voluntary organisations and service providers.
- Referring on to the Rehabilitation and Mobility Officers within the team where needs have been identified.
Our Rehabilitation Workers are specifically trained to work with visually impaired people. They provide support and carry out specialist assessments including the following:
- Support an individual with the impact of sight loss and understanding the effects it can have on the person, their family, friends and their work.
- Assess the home environment giving advice and guidance in areas such as lighting and use of colour contrast.
- Advising and teaching people how to make the best use of their remaining vision including correct use of magnifiers.
- Advising and teaching people how to manage everyday living tasks safely i.e. cooking, housework, shopping etc.
- Advising and teaching people how to manage their personal living tasks i.e. medication, clothing etc.
- Assessing and providing mobility and orientation training both indoors and outdoors to enable safe access to the environment. This includes training in the use of a white cane.
